The Hotel – Since 1877

Hankø Hotel & Spa traces its history back to 1877 when the island became an exclusive retreat for wealthy citizens, artists, and royalty. Originally established as Hankø Bath and Coastal Sanatorium, it was part of a health movement where saltwater baths and fresh sea air were believed to have therapeutic benefits.

The main building featured a grand dining hall, described as “exceedingly fine and noble,” a gathering room with a piano, a billiard room with an extensive veranda, and six guest rooms. Secluded bathhouses were located in a quiet bay, with separate areas for men and women.

Royal & Cultural Heritage

Over the years, Hankø became a meeting place for adventurers and bon vivants from Norway and beyond. In its first 25 years, more than 10,000 visitors—mostly Norwegians but also guests from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Russia, and America—came to experience its charm.
King Oscar II visited in 1878, captivated by the island’s atmosphere, setting a precedent for future royal visits. Crown Prince Haakon VII and Queen Maud followed in later years, and in 1949, the Norwegian royal family established their summer residence, Bloksberg, on the island.

The Hotel’s Growth & Development

As Hankø gained popularity, Hankø Bath and Coastal Sanatorium continued to expand. By the turn of the 20th century, it could accommodate 250 guests, offering state-of-the-art health treatments and bathing facilities. Its reputation as an exclusive destination spread, attracting visitors from across Europe.

During World War II, the hotel was requisitioned by the German forces for military use. After the war, extensive efforts were required to restore the property, but Hankø successfully regained its status as one of Norway’s premier holiday resorts.

From Spa Resort to Modern Hotel

In the post-war era, Hankø Bath and Coastal Sanatorium underwent significant transformations. During the 1960s and 70s, the buildings were modernized, shifting focus toward leisure and conference guests. While incorporating modern amenities, the hotel carefully preserved its historic charm.

In 2002, a wellness center with a pool and sauna was introduced, along with a private chapel, making Hankø a sought-after venue for weddings and special celebrations. Over the years, the hotel’s Christmas banquets have also grown in popularity, now considered among the most spectacular in Norway.

Hankø Today

Today, Hankø Hotel & Spa blends its rich heritage with modern facilities and nature-based experiences. The hotel has 120 rooms, 45 seaside cottages, a well-equipped conference center, a variety of activities, including tennis, mini golf, and scenic hiking trails.

Its car-free island setting offers an exclusive and tranquil atmosphere, far from the noise of city life. The hotel’s restaurant balances tradition with innovation, attracting guests who return year after year to enjoy the peace and serenity of the island.

As Danish poet Holger Drachmann once wrote:
“Again in Hankø, this beautiful place,
For which I longed so much,
Here one finds company and health,
For the money well spent.”
